The Strength Within (Storytime)

How to Harness Your Inner Power and Wield it to do Your Bidding I n 2020, my little rainbow 🌈 bundle of joy was born at 24 weeks weighing 1 lb, 10 ounces.  I can remember the day she was born like it was yesterday. Around 12 am, I felt crazy pain in my lower abdomen.  I could barely move.  I put on the heart monitor I purchased at Amazon for peace of mind.  Her heartbeats were active and similar to the prior nights.   I promised her if she let me sleep, I'd go into the hospital when the sun came up. Sis, if you make promises, you better keep them.  😂 I woke up to pain like no other.  I took out my phone and monitored the pains.  They were coming every three minutes.   I knew I was in labor. I packed up my van life experience, told my nieces I was heading to the hospital and got on I-75.   As soon as I got to the hospital, I could barely walk.  Girl, I left my van at the front door and told the security desk I was in...

Less Coffee, More Focus

Image
This is not an all out campaign to end the sale of coffee. This is not an attempt to explain the health benefits of drinking coffee or not drinking coffee. No, quite the opposite . Let me explain. Years ago, I worked the night shift for an airline.  I worked in customer service so I had my fair share of reasons why I'd hit up Starbucks before my shift would start.  The real reason I needed coffee was because I was typically tired before my shift. I was also exhausted after my actual shift ended, well before my mandatory overtime was over. You see, I lived where I could afford .  My $10-12 bucks an hour wouldn't afford a place near my job.  No.  So, I found a small town about an hour or so away from the company's parking garage and moved there.   On to the next step.   I would take the shuttle bus about another hour to the concourse where we'd meet as a group for another 20 minutes. Y'all, by the time my shift started, I was extremely ti...

The Age of Corporate Careerism

Image
Y'all,  I came across an article or two about ageism in the workplace.  It was very compelling and it brought different reasons to light as to why more seasoned women experience this issue.  As someone who has hit the 40th mark, I can finally see this issue from both sides.  Some may say, I don't have much to contribute, but lend me your ear.  I might surprise you. In my earlier years I was gung ho on starting from the bottom of a corporate company and working my way up.  I would work overtime.  I would learn how new positions worked. You could also find me on projects and volunteer events, learning new processes and programs.  But the one thing I heard religiously when it was time to move up within the ranks, was that I was ‘ not seasoned enough.’ The first time I applied for a managerial position after three or four years of labor with the first company, I was advised I had many more years to apply and that someone older would be chosen.  ...

Building Your (Big Girl) Voice

Image
It All Started with My Voice. Y’all,  I’ve always been a strong-willed individual even as a youngster, but I also dabbled with a taste of wanting folks around me to “like me”. That combination was extremely fatal for me. Whenever I saw an issue I wanted to address that would ruffle feathers, I’d practice the speech in the mirror, but by the time it was ‘game time’, I’d freeze. And I know some of you may say, I was just “afraid of public speaking’, but honestly, I wasn’t. I had a deliberating fear that if I said things that were out of the norm, folks would genuinely not like me. And as a child, that was a huge issue! Just imagine being in high school. You start taking courses and you notice the teacher is barely there. You end up never doing class work, always getting “good grades”, but deep down, you want to tell someone because you know if WILL affect your future. Y’all, I told my fellow classmates how I felt, and you can imagine how that ended up! Deep down I craved friend...

What Problem Have You Solved Today?

Image
When I was in school, I would always hear our science teacher tell our class to, “ Figure it out, ” in response to a question that needed answering.   We (our small class groups) would then come up with our hypotheses and test it.  We would test our answer many times, to the point that we sometimes wanted to give up.   But once we read over a few books and talked out our problems amongst ourselves, we were able to create multiple answers to the one problem our teacher tasked us with. How does this correlate with now? “Someone is out there waiting on YOU to show up and they can’t get to their NEXT level until you show them how.” I’m serious. If we look at our lives and take inventory of the problems we’ve faced throughout our years of living and the answers we’ve created for those problems, it would probably stretch around the globe. Look at how you were able to get the job you have, get the house you have and get the car you drive.  Then look at the motiva...

What Are You Waiting A Lifetime To Do?

Image
Do it anyway. I'm a complete nerd when it comes to this subject.  I have found myself deep in the trenches with folks I believed to be dear to me only to find when “life happened”, they were quick to slide out. No disrespect.   But I like to ‘call a spade a spade’ and true friends, true friends. This is not a bashing session, this is a quick uplifting moment for those who may find themselves at the bottom.  The bottom of the bottom. Do me a favor?   Close your eyes and think of the last time you really needed to create something or finish a project? Who was rooting for you? Who was your cheerleader? Or did you, like I've done many times before, find yourself looking for inspiration on all social media outlets to encourage you to keep pushing? If you answered, YES, to the latter, then this message is definitely for you.   We all have dreams that get buried deep down under work, family, school work, life… .and those dreams are dying to get back to ...
