The Age of Corporate Careerism

Y'all,

I came across an article or two about ageism in the workplace.  It was very compelling and it brought different reasons to light as to why more seasoned women experience this issue.  As someone who has hit the 40th mark, I can finally see this issue from both sides.  Some may say, I don't have much to contribute, but lend me your ear.  I might surprise you.

In my earlier years I was gung ho on starting from the bottom of a corporate company and working my way up.

  • I would work overtime.

  • I would learn how new positions worked.

  • You could also find me on projects and volunteer events, learning new processes and programs.

But the one thing I heard religiously when it was time to move up within the ranks, was that I was ‘not seasoned enough.’

The first time I applied for a managerial position after three or four years of labor with the first company, I was advised I had many more years to apply and that someone older would be chosen.

That stung me quite a bit, but I figured they were right and maybe I needed more experience.  Once that company dissolved and years went past, I found myself at another corporate company learning different processes.  I was chosen to complete projects, QA and more, but when it was time for me to finally reach a new plateau within another role officially, I was told they were going to hire someone from the outside that had been in the role for over 20 years.

My heart sank.

Here I was with over 10 years experience, several projects under my belt, but yet again, I just wasn't ‘old enough’ to take on a higher position within a corporate company.

I bring to you these experiences to give an opposing view that ALL women experience ageism in the corporate setting.  I believe there are quite a few situations where older women have been discriminated against and that should be addressed.

It should be outlawed.

No one should experience a shortage of opportunities due to being older.

But I also charge everyone to research different age groups and you'll find that younger women who attempt to create a career in corporate settings find it difficult to move up in the ranks as well.

We are all entitled to our own opinions and I understand if some folks won't agree with me.  But I hope readers can apply their own knowledge and research to the subject and at least agree to differ in opinion.
